Welcome to Term 4! I am really looking forward to the many performance opportunities we have before the end of the year. Carmina Burana will be upon us before we know it on Saturday 27th November – what a thrill it will be to sing this exciting and bold music with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Please note – we will no longer be rehearsing Saturday 30th October in the morning. With student unavailability, and the solid work the choir have already done on the music, we will not need to rehearse that morning.
2CC are also making excellent progress on their own pieces for the YAV end of year concert on Sunday 5th December. So we can continue to effectively learn all of this different music, please prioritise rehearsal attendance, as well as arriving before 5pm so that we can start right on time. As always, please bring a pencil, all of your music, and water.
Thank you all for your energy and commitment – let’s enjoy these valuable performance experiences for the end of 2021!
I am looking forward to seeing you all this Thursday for rehearsal! Please remember to be on time and ready to sing at 5pm. Please bring all of your music (unless you have not collected your folder since they were organised last term), and make sure you have a pencil and water (as always.)
As we enter our final week of rehearsals before the holidays, I want to thank the ensemble for their work over what has been a slightly less consistent term than what we have been used to. Thank you for engaging with the zoom rehearsals, and for continuing to follow our covid rules.
As this is our final rehearsal for the term – please make sure you all have a pencil, and bring all of your music in your folders. Anthea will also be taking these at the end of our rehearsal to organise them over the break.
Please find below the updated YAV Calendar for September – December 2021, with a few changes to your scheduling and commitments.
In 2020 when the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra invited YAV to be the children’s choir for it’s new commission “Nativity” by Richard Mills, Richard was looking for a young-sounding choir, who could sing well in 1 or 2 parts.
When the music arrived last week, Ali and I realised that it was a lot more complex than initially thought, and musically and harmonically it was a better fit for 1CC.
However, we are so fortunate to have 2 ASO gigs around the same time, and 2CC will now be joining 1CC in Carl Orff’s seminal work “Carmina Burana” as the “ragazzi” or children’s chorus, on Saturday 27 November at the Adelaide Showgrounds. We will be singing this with the ASO, Elder Conservatorium Chorale and the Graduate Singers, who sing the adult Chorus. It’s not a huge amount of music to learn, but you spend your evening surrounded by singers and orchestral musicians.
We’d like to add in one rehearsal morning in the holidays to put 1CC and 2CC together: Saturday 9 October from 10am – 12pm in the YAV Front Hall.
Ali and Leonie have played you some of the music in rehearsal, but here are some excerpts you can share.
15) Amor volat undique (children’s chorus and soprano solo)
22) Tempus est iocundum (Baritone & Soprano solo, children’s chorus and adult chorus
And here’s the opening chorus, used in so many extreme adventure ads!
You are going to absolutely love being involved in Carmina Burana – please look carefully at the schedule and email firstname.lastname@example.org if there are any issues with the week of the concert – that’s where the main changes lie for families. You can take all Nativity rehearsals out of your diaries. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding with the changes.
As you may have heard, Tracy Shepherd is leaving YAV after 10 years of incredible work in the organisation.
Tracy has been instrumental in improving, creating and updating all our systems. She designed the new website and designed all the systems for both WATU Youth Choir Festivals, in 2015 and 2018 and has coordinated all our Covid plans and has made sure YAV has been compliant throughout the pandemic, an enormous task, given the concerns around singing.
She has very much been the beating heart of this organisation from behind the scenes, and will be terribly missed.
YAV is looking for a part-time Administrator to replace Tracy, and choir community is an ideal place for us to look – we welcome another like-minded person into our team. The application can be investigated through Seek.com Youth Choir Administrator Job in Adelaide – SEEK and applications close on Monday 13 September 2021.
Tracy will be with us until Thursday 16 September before she goes to her new job. We want to thank her so much for the wonderful work she has done at YAV and wish her the very best in her new role.
Young Adelaide Voices is seeking a reliable, self-motivated and organised individual with excellent communication skills, to provide the administration role for its 6 choirs. This is an ideal opportunity for a creative person to manage a flexible part-time position working with South Australia’s leading youth choir school.
The successful applicant will be required to have confidence with a variety of IT applications and be open to liaising with all stakeholders from the YAV community to professional arts organisations.
Community-minded in nature, Young Adelaide Voices welcomes candidates who are excited to work with the choir and its Artistic Director to foster growth and development of young people in youth music and singing. To this end experience in music performance and/or event planning and a demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and partnerships with schools would be an advantage.
We are delighted to welcome our choristers back to rehearsals from this Thursday.
Rehearsals will run for the usual times:
4:30pm – 5:00PM GROUP 1 MUSICIANSHIP
5:00pm – 6:30PM 2CC FULL CHOIR REHEARSAL
6:30PM – 7:00PM GROUP 2 MUSICIANSHIP
Everyone over the age of 12 will be required to wear a mask while in the building under the current restrictions in SA (unless an exemption has been granted, if you wear a mask at school you should do so at choir).
Please remember the basics:
don’t come to choir if sick or if you are awaiting a covid test result
social distancing and hand sanitizing
covid check in required by all entering the building unless a chorister as the roll will be taken
